Magpies, Pica pica, at the southern limit of their range actively select their thermal environment at high ambient temperatures

Abstract. The effect of high ambient temperatures on the behaviour of Magpies (Pica pica) was assessed in northern Cyprus, which marks the southern limit of their European range. Magpies actively selected their thermal environment when temperatures rose above 31C, by retreating to shaded areas. On days when the temperature was higher, Magpies appeared to spend more time perched in the shade and less time foraging. Flying and foraging activities were generally restricted to cooler parts of the day. Magpies were rarely seen panting or drinking and gular fluttering was not observed. We suggest that utilisation of shade is important for Magpies to regulate their body temperature, allowing them to remain common at the southern limit of their range despite experiencing high temperatures.

On the diet and population of the Alexandrine Parakeet, Psittacula eupatria, in the urban environment of Tehran, Iran

Abstract. Observations on the Alexandrine Parakeet (Psittacula eupatria), an alien species, at Keshavarzi Garden, Tehran, during 2000-2003, showed that the preferred food items were seeds of Pine (Pinus eldarica), Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens), Plane (Platanus orientalis), Elm (Ulmus carpinifolia), and fruits of Quince (Goldenapple) (Cydonia oblonga), Pear (Pyrus communis), Kaki (Persimmon) (Diospyros kaki). 78% and 59% of pine cones collected from two stations in the garden were certainly cut by P. eupatria. An estimation of the number of birds in Tehran gave at least 200 birds, based on a count in selected areas in winter 2003/2004. P. eupatria contributed 97% to the population of the two parakeets (P. eupatria and P. krameri) for some large parks, but only comprises c. 10% of the birds in some aviaries and pet shops.

A new species of the Acanthodactylus pardalis group (Reptilia: Lacertidae) from Jordan

Abstract. A new species of the Acanthodactylus pardalis group, A. ahmaddisii sp.n., is described from Jordan, from a single specimen which differs from A. pardalis (Lichtenstein, 1823) of eastern Libya and Egypt, and A. beershebensis Moravec et al., 1999 from Israel. Compared to the latter two populations, A. ahmaddisii is larger with smaller head and shorter appendages and fewer (larger) dorsals. It also differs in qualitative pholidotic characters, especially by having tricarinate subdigitals, and in colour pattern.

Key words. Acanthodactylus ahmaddisii, A. beershebensis, A. pardalis, Lacertidae, Middle East, Jordan, new species.

Embryonic and larval staging of the Arabian Toad, Bufo arabicus (Amphibia: Bufonidae)

Abstract. The development of Bufo arabicus, is described here from the zygote to the newly metamorphosed toadlet. The ontogeny of B. arabicus is arranged into successive stages numbered 1–45. These include the zygote (stage 1), cleavage (stages 2–6), blastula (stages 7–8), gastrulation (stages 9–11), the neurulation stages (stages 12–15), embryonic development (stages 16–23), larval period (stages 24–41), metamorphosis (stages 42–44) and the juvenile/toadlet (stage 45). The description of the developmental stages is based on the external morphological and physiological characteristics and is accompanied by photographs. The stages in the present table for the development of B. arabicus are compared with normal tables of the genus Bufo and other anuran species. The development of B. arabicus resembles very closely that of other Bufo spp. Minor differences can be seen between the different staging tables of different species because of variations in methods of staging and the criteria on which the table was based. One special feature is that B. arabicus hatches early (stage 15) compared to other reported bufonids.
